About Downey, CA
Beautiful Downey Homes for Sale
Tucked away in Southeast Los Angeles County is Downey, California – a business-friendly city with a rich history. The city’s claims to fame are many: It is the place where the space program Apollo began for NASA. The Apollo space program eventually landed the first men ever on the surface of the moon.
Downey is also the home of the oldest operational McDonald’s in the United States, the first Taco Bell in the United States, and was home to a greasy burger joint that was all the rage in the 1960s. For such quirky personality, Downey has idyllic residential homes. The quiet little city is tremendous for families large and small. Downey is classic Southern California at its best.

And with perfect Southern California weather, it’s no wonder so many families flock to the area.
Interestingly, Downey is home to a melting pot of Latino cultures. Boasting the highest concentration of Cuban-Americans and Cubans in the Western United States as well as a large Puerto Rican community, the heritages and cultures found in Downey encompass a rich cross-section of the Latin world. Four area freeways – Interstate 710, the 5, the 105, and the 605 – serve the area.
Johnie’s Broiler
There seems to be a trend of famous fast-casual and fast food restaurants making a splash in Downey. One of the most famous restaurants in all of Southern California in the 1960s was Johnie’s Broiler. Originally called Harvey’s Broiler, this greasy burger joint was a staple of SoCal culture for decades. Sports car drivers and motorcycle riders cruised for miles just to hang out in Johnie’s parking lot and show off their rides. The restaurant has been opened and closed several times, but the landmark still stands today, leased long-term now by the hardworking Jim Louder of Big Boy restaurant’s fame.
